Natalie Dessay Giuseppe Filianoti Lucia Di Lammermoor Opera

Chico >> Opera aficionados going mad waiting for another viewing need suffer no longer.

In the second installation of the Grand Opera Cinema Series, Chico Performances will be presenting a showing of the opera “Lucia di Lammermoor.” The showing is being held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27 in the Zingg Recital Hall on the Chico State University campus.

Heralded as having the best mad scene in all of opera, “Lucia di Lammermoor” is a three-act dramma tragico tale of passion and desperation by Gaetano Donizetti.

According to Stephen Cummins, director of Chico State University Public Events, the Grand Opera Cinema Series is a four-part series of pre-recorded performances by the San Francisco Opera. All of the performances are sung in Italian, but include English supertitles.

“What they’ve done is put together a very lovely version of the production onto film,” he said. “In our little 200 seat theater, Zingg Recital Hall, you’ll get to see exactly what it looks like live.”

In the opera, Lucia is a woman who is manipulated into marrying a man she doesn’t love. In the third act’s mad scene, where her insanity comes to a brink, her instability wavers between joy and terror.

San Francisco Opera’s Natalie Dessay, Giuseppe Filianoti, Gabriele Viviani and Oren Gradus star in the opera.

“Lucia di Lammermoor” is loosely based on Sir Walter Scott’s historical novel, The Bride of Lammermoor.

Cummins said they intentionally chose to show two tragedies and two more light hearted operas. The remaining two operas in the series include “Elixir of Love” on Feb. 12 and “Tosca” on April 30. The first showing was of “La Boheme” in September.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, $10 for youths and $10 for Chico State students.
